Her father was Franz Grabowski. She married Franz/Frank Julkowski, who emigrated with their son Jan in April 1913 on the Volturno. In October 1913 she and five younger children emigrated, headed for NY, also on the Volturno. However, the ship caught fire and sank in the Atlantic. Other ships came to the rescue, but about 130 passengers and crew died. The SS Seydlitz picked up Maria and sons Florian and Bruno; Helena, Genevieve, and Franz were rescued by the SS La Touraine. Fortunately, the family was reunited and more children were born to Franz and Marie in Minnesota.
