Dean served as a Technical Sergeant & Top Turret Gunner on B-17G #42-38001, 338th Bomber Squadron, 96th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided at 629 Garson Avenue, Rochester, Monroe County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on October 5, 1942 in Rochester, New York. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as an Electrician and also as Single, without dependents.

B-17G #42-38001 took off from AAF Station 138, England on a bombing mission over Frankfurt, Germany. They were attacked by German Aircraft and a German Me109 crashed into them and they ended up crashing into a quarry near Reichweeiler, eight miles northeast 0f St Wendel, Germany during the war.

Dean was "Killed In Action" in this crash.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.
