Henry Cummickel was born in Chillicothe,Ohio in December, 1842. He was an orphan who's surname may have been Carmichael and later was changed to Cummickel for unknown reasons. The earliest records found that appear to be Henry is the 1850 Census which list a Henry Carmichael as a pauper living in Hudson Township, Summit County, Ohio.
As a young man he was a farm hand for Benjamin Betsworth in Kane County, Illinois.
He was a union solier in the Civil War as a private with Company A of the 7th Illinois Infantry. After the war he returned to Kane County, Illinois. He later received a Civil War Veterans Pension.
On October 5, 1865, in Kane County, Illinois, Henry married the daughter of Mr. Betsworth, Cinderella Ann Betsworth. Shortly after thier marriage the Cummickel and Betsworth families moved to Le Mars, Iowa. and later to Topeka, Kansas where Henry lived until the time of his death.
Henry and Cinderella had five children, sons: Charles Warren, Edward Allen and Clarence Prescott, daughters; Della E and Laura May.
Funeral services were held at Penwell chapel with burial following at Tpeka Cemetery.
