Elizabeth was born in Wapello County Iowa, the oldest child of George Smith and Ellen Turner Smith.
Elizabeth married Eli A Thornton on July 11, 1918 in Hocking, Monroe County, Iowa. Eli passed away at a very young age. She and Eli had two children namely James A Thornton (1919-1998) and Kenneth Eugene Thornton Sr. (1920-1981).
Elizabeth married her second husband Harry Clarke Palmer Sr. on July 3, 1924. Harry was from Albia, Monroe County, Iowa and had been working in Detroit. They were married in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan. Harry and Elizabeth had three children namely Margaret Ann Palmer (12-11-1932 till Early Jan. 1933), Harry Clarke Palmer Jr. (1926-1993), and Jackie Lee Palmer (1934-Living).
Harry was a good man and raised James and Kenneth as his own children. They went by the last name Palmer until they joined the Military. Elizabeth and Harry are buried here together along with Elizabeth's son Kenneth Eugene Thornton Sr., Harry Clarke Palmer Jr., and Jr.'s son Bruce Clarke Palmer. Their GG Grandson Zachary Palmer is also buried here at this cemetery but not with the rest of the family.
Odd family fact: Eli Thornton, Elizabeth's first husband is buried at Oakview Cemetery in Albia, Monroe, Iowa along with her parents and Elizabeth & Harry's daughter Margaret Palmer. Harry Clarke Palmer Sr. is buried in this Cemetery along with Elizabeth and her son Kenneth Thornton. Just find that to be sort of funny that Eli is buried with Harry's Child and Harry is buried with Eli's Child.
