Adam Fortney was the son of John and Mary Christina (Reel) Fortney, prob. born in Letterkenny Twp. Franklin Co. Pa (however his civil war enlistment papers state Cumberland Co. Pa). He married (1) Emily Dewey May 14, 1842 in Trumbull County Ohio. married (2) Louise Harrison (2 record dates) Feb. 26, 1870 and March 8, 1870 Fayette Iowa. There must have been a divorce as she was alive until 1897. Married (3) Mamie Huffman (2 record dates) Dec. 15, 1871
and Dec. 29, 1871; (on Pension application, she listed her name as 'Minnie'. He served in the Civil War; Iowa 6th C; enl 22 Sep 1862 age 42 res Fayette Co m.o. 17 Oct 1865 Sioux City Iowa;
He died May 7, 1886 Taylorsville Iowa, and was buried in Grandview Cemetery. Adam had several brothers and sisters; David, John, Christopher, Christina, Mary/Martha/Matty, Jacob, and Daniel. The Fortney's moved from Trumbull Co. Ohio about 1855/56; Adam and (nephew?) Benjamin (Benjamin on 1856 Iowa census) to Iowa; Jacob his brother across the Mississippi river, in Crawford County Wisconsin; Christopher with their mother (and father?) moved with the Swartz families to Wood/Henry county's Ohio; while the two sisters stayed in Trumbull.

Adam's Civil War enlistment papers on Sept. 22, 1862 state he was 42 years and 5 months old = April 1820 and born in Cumberland co. pa...(Franklin Co. was made from Cumberland co. Pa); it should be noted that Adam was about 3 years of age when he left Pennsylvania..

March 5, 1821 birthdate appears to be taken from the stone which is very blackened and difficult to read...will have to be checked carefully ...(more likely March 5, 1820)
