J. M. Padgett Passes Away After Lingering Illness

J. M. Padgett one of the most outstanding citizens of the Greenleaf community, passed away at his home here in Greenleaf early Saturday morning. Although Mr. Padgett had been in failing health for the past year, his death came as a sudden shock to relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon, October 19 in the Christian Church, conducted by the Reverend Mr. J. F. Shirck, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church of Greenleaf. Music for the services was sung by Mrs. Henry Schwerdtfeger and Lawrence Anderson with Mrs. Edna Miller accompanist. Interment was made in the Maplewood Cemetery, Barnes, KS.

Pall bearers were Earnest Finley, Matt Wurtz, Paul Flear, H. C. Waterman, H. M. Ryland and M. J. Scott.

John Manson Padgett, son of John Cavin Padgett and Margaret Ann (Norris) Padgett, was born August 8, 1869, in Farmers, Kentucky and departed this life at his home in Greenleaf, Kansas, October 17, 1953, at the age of 84 years, 2 months, and 9 days.

As a small child he moved with his parents to Peabody, Kansas. Here he grew to manhood and on September 10, 1890, was united in marriage to Martha A. McGinnis of Greenleaf.

After engaging in the mercantile business for a number of years in Glasco, Kansas, he came to Greenleaf in 1915 and organized the Citizens National Bank. Serving in the capacity as city mayor and a member of the school board for several years, Mr. Padgett proved to be one of Greenleaf's most substantial citizens, ever mindful of his fellowmen and the progress of his community. He was a lifetime member of the Christian Church and a 32nd degree Mason.

Left to mourn his passing are his children, Mrs. Gladys Neal of Greenleaf; Mrs. Martha Beverly of Concordia; Sherman H. Padgett of Greenleaf and Mrs. Pearl Rafn of Santa Ana, California; ten grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; one half-brother and four half-sisters; and a host of other relatives and friends.

His wife preceded him in death on May 2, 1929. One son, Dr. Earl C. Padgett, died December 2, 1946, and an infant daughter, Ethel M. also preceded him in death.Greenleaf (Kansas) Sentinel dated Oct 22, 1953
