Son of James Verner in Elizabeth Doyle.

He laid out the village of Verona.

He organized the first street railway west of the Allegheny Mountains with the Citizens' Passenger Railway Company in 1859.

Verner was one of the organizers of the Pittsburg(h) Iron and Forge Company.
