William was the son of Aaron and Phoebe Doty. He had at least 6 siblings named Marshall, Amanda, Caroline, Harriet, Victoria and Hudson. William was an Engineer in the 1870 Federal Census and lived in Hoboken, New Jersey. He might have served in the Civil War as there is a record of a William H. H. Doty being mustered out of the Union Army in 1865 in Patterson, New Jersey.
