Jacob Nickel was born in Russia to David and Maria (Krahn) Nickel. The family emigrated to Manitoba, Canada along with almost seven thousand other German Mennonites. Jacob's mother died before the family left Russia. They arrived in Quebec on 19 Jul 1875 aboard the S.S. Canadian; the same ship upon which his future wife, Maria Dueck, arrived.
In a family history, it is said that he worked on the riverboats with his brother, Dave, a couple years before getting married. All of Jacob and "Mary's" children except one son were born in Manitoba. That son, was born in 1886 in Marion Co., Kansas.
They were found in the 1881, 1891 and 1901 census in Canada. In 1903 Jacob and his wife purchased land in Polk Co., OR; in 1906 and remained in the Northwest the remainder of their lives. The owned land in Lincoln Co., WA, Nez Perce (later Lewis) county, ID and Walla Walla Co., WA.
