***** Thua Thien/Hue, Viet Nam, on 25, April 1965, Randall Kenneth Campbell, died. He was one, of two, KIAs., that evening. Randy, was from Montreal, Canada.
What follows, begin with a "bird dog's," (Aerial Observer's) communication to the Recon. and Grunt forces, on that Thua Thien, hilltop. The bird dog's, message, was straight forward, 'You are about, to be surrounded, by unfriendlies.'
Unwilling, to simply sit and wait to be hit, Randy convinced, the command to allow him, to go down the hill, to prepare booby traps, to deny, the enemy, the element of surprise should, they actually decide to attack, the hill's occupants. Pfc., John Chambers, another B-Recon., (Hawaii) Marine was not going to let Randy go it alone. . Randy and John with an M-14, each, two hand grenades each and some trip wire stole their way down the hill to the enemy's most likely entry points. Here, they split up and began setting in their booby traps. A rice paddy was not to far away. And when John heard the sucking sound, of troops, moving through the paddy's mud, he whispered, to Randy that they both need to "di-di" out of there.
Randy's last words, were, "I'll be done, in just a second." Before Randy could get out, there followed two, perhaps three, explosions. John was blown up.
