George was the son of Paul W. Jmaeff and Helen Jmaeff of Osoyoos British Columbia Canada and he enlisted in the US Marine Corps on November 28, 1967 in Seattle WA. Arriving in Vietnam on July 2, 1968 he was assigned for duty with Company C, 1st Battalion, 4th Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF in northern Quang Tri Province.

In January during Operation SCOTLAND II, Company C was searching the area of Dong Voi Mep in the Huong Hoa District of Quang Tri Province several kilometers south of the DMZ when Cpl Jmaeff a squad leader, on the point of his patrol observed a NVA squad concealed in the undergrowth and took them under fire. His actions foiled a planned enemy ambush and caused the enemy to withdraw. For his quick actions he would later be awarded the Bronze Star Medal.

On March 1, Company C was attached and under the OPCON (Operational Control) of the 3d Battalion, 4th Marines deployed as a reaction force with the mission of seizing Hill 484 Nui Cay Tre known as "Mutters Ridge" by the Marines which was located in the Huong Hoa District in Quang Tri Province. At approximately 1200 Hours as the lead platoon was moving uphill through the heavy undergrowth contact was made with the NVA who had concealed themselves in fortified positions. Heavy small arms and 60mm enemy mortar fire poured down on the Marines slowing their advance. Artillery fire was brought to bear on the enemy positions and the Company inched forward finally seizing their objective. Three men were killed in the fire fights with the NVA, one of the casualties was Cpl Jmaeff who was serving as a Platoon Sergeant, and he was killed in action as a result of an enemy gunshot wound. For his heroism he would be awarded the Navy Cross Medal.
