Cletus Devine Buckner, 83, of 60 Roberts Street, died at 7:15am Sunday in Asheville Hospital following a brief illness,

Mr Buckner was a native and lifelong resident of Buncombe County, and a retired employee of the Old Asheville Cotton Mills.

He was a charter member of Patton Avenue Baptist Church, and the Men's Bible class of the church, and was considered an authority on the life of Abraham Lincoln.

Mr. Buckner was the son of the late Squire Jefferson Buckner and Martha Drake Buckner.

Surviving are the widow, Minnie Victoria Myers Buckner , one son Cecil G. Buckner of Asheville and two daughters, Vivian Buckner Howington, and Ethel Buckner of the home.

Services will be held at 2:00 pm Tuesday in Patton Avenue Baptist Church. Rev. A. J. Buckner, Rev. Ralph Hensley, and Rev. B. E. Samples will officiate.

Active pallbearers will be Sherman Hensley, L. J. Emory, Worth Emory, Clarence Emory, Jerry Emory, and Woodson Emory.

Burial will be in Ivy Hill Cemetery, Buncombe County, North Carolina. He gave some of the land for Ivy Hill Cemetery where he and his children, Vivian Howington, Cecil Buckner and Ethel Buckner are buried.


Notes: Cletus Devine Buckner was appointed Postmaster for a new Post Office at Ivy Hill, Buncombe County, N.C. The New Post Office was called Cletus, it operated from October 1, 1898 until April 30, 1914. Martha Buckner, his mother became Post Master after Cletus married and moved to Asheville around 1903. He retired from the old Asheville Cotton Mill. Cletus and Minnie were the parents of Cecil G. Buckner, Vivian Buckner Howington and Ethel Buckner.
