Chief Executive Officer, Chairman of the board and President of Central Steel and Wire company. He was born in Chicago and raised in Valparaiso, Indiana.
He was a 1942 graduate of Culver Military Academy. At Culver, Mr. Lowenstine ran varsity track and was involved in company football and boxing. He was a member of Company B, a corporal in the motorized infantry, a member of the Honor Guard, and recipient of the Silver Physical Training Medal.
He attended Indiana University and was a 2nd lieutenant in the US Army during World War II. He began working for Central Steel in 1946, following in the footsteps of his father, a steel merchant.
He contributed $380,000 toward the construction of Culver Military Academy's natatorium complex that bears his name, and he donated annually toward maintenance of the pool and diving tank.
Jim owned a resort at Land O' Lakes, Wis. which he called Lowenwood. Jim had no heirs, and so he established a trust to form a school at Lowenwood. The initial Conserve School Board of Trustees consisted of Central Steel and Wire officers.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine.
