Birth: Aug. 9, 1840
Madison County
Ohio, USA
Death: Sep. 27, 1897

The youngest of the six children of John Milton and Lydia Howard Culver, Henry started making his own way in the world at the age of fifteen. Along with his brother Wallace, he formed the acquaintance of John McCreary, who along with his brother Joseph was engaged in the general hardware business. The Culver brothers entered their employ for the purpose of selling cast iron stoves to farmers throughout the country. Soon after his marriage to Emily Hand, Henry became associated with his two brothers Wallace and Lucius in business. Making their headquarters in Shawneetown, Illinois, they engaged in selling direct to the farmers cast iron stoves which they purchased from Ball & Company of Cincinnati. After five years they decided to withdraw from that business and embark in another line. In 1869 they shipped all their property to Kansas City, Missouri and invested their entire working capital of about one hundred thousand dollars in a general house furnishing store. This did not prove profitable and they lost very heavily in that venture. They they decided to head south in 1870 and made arrangements to again engage in the stove business. Henry later became the founder of the Wrought Iron Range Company. In 1894, he founded the Culver Military Academy in Culver, Indiana.
