Leonard Hayes Edgeworth, Jr., 68, beloved husband of Ernestine Chappell Edgeworth, died at the scene of a traffic accident Wednesday afternoon, December 17, 2003. L. H., as he was known, son of Leonard and Dulah Todd Edgeworth, Sr., was born in Hartsville and grew up in the "High Hill" area of Scranton. He was a graduate of Lake City High and just attended a 50 year class reunion. Early in his life he served 6 months active duty and was a reservist with the U. S. Army. His lifelong career was as a professional meat cutter in various retail stores and processing plants. He taught meat cutting courses at Florence Darlington Technical College. L. H. was a former owner of an IGA Food Store and most recently owned and operated Evergreen Game Processing, both located in the Evergreen community. At the age of 18, L.H. accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. His life mission was to work " as unto the Lord." Regardless of where he was, he worked. He worked in his home, his community, his church, and on a mission trip to Kosovo. A highlight of his life was to go on Men's Mission Trips with Greenwood and Calvary Baptist Church's brotherhood, to build churches. His personal ministry at Greenwood Baptist was the " Mite Ministry'. He had a deep love for the Bible and throughout the years he taught children and adult classes. He never met a stranger and had a joke for whoever would listen. Gardening, planting, and picking flowers in his yard brought him great pleasure. His wife of 46 years, Ernestine, his children: Laura Edgeworth, Leonard and Tammy Edgeworth, and Mike and Sharon E. King, and his grandchildren: Brooke, Hayes, Amy, and Anna, and nephews Edward and Gary Padgett, who had lived in the home survive him. He is also survived by six sisters: Genelle E. Lee, Faye E. Collins, Marceline E. Allen, Anne E. Sweat (all of Jacksonville, FL, Nancy E. Calcutt (Hemingway, SC), Jane E. Guthrie (Callahan, FL), and four brothers: Norman K. Edgeworth (Johnsonville, SC), Charles C. Edgeworth (Hanahan, SC), Douglas M. Edgeworth (Kingstree, SC), and Don B. Edgeworth (Scranton, SC) and many nieces and nephews. L.H. was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Michael Alan King, Jr. Funeral service was held on Friday, December 19, 2003, in Greenwood Baptist Church, directed by WatersPowell Funeral Home. Burial was in Evergreen Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Greenwood Baptist Church Building Fund, 2401 Claussen Road, Florence, SC 29505.
