Professional Football Player. He attended George County High School in Lucedale, Mississippi, and played collegiate football at the University of Mississippi. While at Ole Miss, he played at the offensive and defensive tackle positions and was a member of Johnny Vaught's Rebels team that captured the Sugar Bowl title in 1958 and won the Gator Bowl in December 1958. He concluded his collegiate career as a participant in the Senior Bowl in 1959, and was named Outstanding Lineman for the South team. Churchwell was selected by the Baltimore Colts during the 1959 NFL Draft, but instead played with the Washington Redskins during that season, appearing in 10 games. He appeared in 1 game with the Oakland Raiders during the 1960 season (the inaugural year for the American Football League).
