C.J. Johnson Was Past 93 Year Old
Passed Away Thrusday, December 30th, Had Been Resident of Dell Rapids Since 1880
The final rites were held for C.J. Johnson at the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids January 1, 1938, at 2 o'clock, with Rev. Ole M. Odland, officiating. Burial was made in the local Cemetery.
Mr. Johnson, the oldest citizen and pioneer of Dell Rapids, passed away Thursday evening, December 30, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Edna Krause after an illness of about three weeks. At times he seemed to rally but a relapse would quickly follow and gradually he became weaker until the end came peacefully. Mr. Johnson had shown great vigor for a man of his age but the past year he had failed perceptibly.
The deceased was born in Oslo, Norway, May 19, 1844, and came to this country at the age of 16, with his parents, two sisters and a brother. His father bought a farm on Coon Prairie near La Crosse, Wisconsin, where the family resided for six years. During this time Mr. Johnson clerked in La Crosse. The family later moved to Rushford, Minnesota, where Mr. Johnson met and married Margit Lien. For 14 years he was occupied in farming and the mercantile business and later in the hardware business in that place. When he sold out he came to Dell Rapids in May, 1880. His family followed some months later.
He took a Homestead in Moody County and entered the hardware business in which he continued for 44 years in a frame building where the Williams hardware is located. The structure which Mr. Johnston built was destroyed by the fire of 1888, after which he built the present stone building.
Having lived far beyond the average age, none remaining were contemporaries of Mr. Johnson and fewer member of the active part he took in the upbuilding of Dell Rapids. He was a member of the city Council for 10 consecutive years and he also served on the school board for many years. He served on the first board of directors for the First National Bank on which board he served for many years. In 1891 he went to the legislator as Sen. from Minnehaha County and while serving in that capacity presented the bill securing a right of way for the road across the school section. He was the oldest member of the Cemetery Association, having served the longest period.
Mr. Johnson was a gentleman of the old school, courteous to all and appreciative of courtesies extended to him. He was aesthetic in his tastes and a great lover of music. His first music teacher was the grandfather of the present music director of the Lutheran College at Beloit. One of his violin instructors was Johan Sevenson of Norway. At 12 years of age he and the directors of son were the only to use in one of the first orchestras of Oslo. This offered opportunities of playing in such places as the Royal Palace.
The death of Mr. Johnson marks the passing of the oldest pioneer businessman of Dell Rapids. His wife preceded him in death by 44 years.
To mourn his loss are his children: Christian S. Johnson of Dell Rapids, associated in business with his father for many years; Inga E. Murray of Loman, Minnesota; Dr. M.L. Johnson, Lead; Caroline Neuman of Ontario, New York; Edna Krause of the city; Judith Doble of Berkeley, California, Louise Lubker of Sioux Falls; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, assist Josephine Fleischer, 91 who resides in Sioux Falls.
