Max Johnson was born April 17, 1918, in St. Charles, IL., the son of Carl and Cora Johnson. He grew up and attended school in Watertown, graduating from Watertown High School in 1937. He attended Augustana College from 1938 to 1941. He entered the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1941 and was dual-rated as bombardier / navigator. After his discharge in 1945, he attended Marquette University and obtained his Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree in 1950.
Dr. Johnson married Ruth Boyd November 6, 1942, in Big Springs, TX. In 1950, they moved to Dell Rapids where he practiced dentistry for 18 years. In 1968, they moved to Watertown where he developed and became Director of Health Occupations at Lake Area Vocational-Technical Institute. He retired in 1980. In 1989, they moved back to Dell Rapids.
He was a member of the American Dental Association, the South Dakota Dental Association, the American Society of Dentistry for Children, Academy of General Dentistry, Delta Sigma Delta Dental Fraternity, Sioux Land Dental Study Club, a Fellow of the International College of Dentists, a Fellow of the American College of Dentists, a Fellow of Augustana College, and a member of the Pierre Fauchard Academy of Dentistry.
Dr. Johnson was president and vice president of the Second District Dental Society; president, vice-president and secretary-treasurer of the American Society of Dentistry for Children; Chairman of the Committee on Dental Health; member of the South Dakota Dental Association Board of Trustees; Program Chairman, South Dakota Dental Association.
He was involved in numerous civic affairs including Dell Rapids Alderman, Acting Mayor of Dell Rapids, chairman of various fund drives, past president of the Dell Rapids Lions Club, member of the American Legion, member of the Department Band of the American Legion, charter member of the Dell Rapids Sportsman's' Club, chairman of the Community Betterment Program, Advisory Board of the Lake Area Mental Health Cemetery, and a member of the Watertown Rotary Club.
He was a former deacon, trustee and president of the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids; a member of the Building Committee for the Education Unit and new church; a member of the Organizational Board for the Bethesda Old People's Home; and past congregational president of the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer in Watertown.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Walter.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Ruth of Dell Rapids; a son, Dr. Geoffery Johnson and his wife, Elizabeth, of Brookings; three daughters, Janine (Mrs. Adrian) Mohr of Aberdeen, Marti (Mrs. Jerry) Pollard of Yankton, and Sarah Johnson of Sioux Falls; and nine grandchildren,
