He was a civil war veteran and had the distinction of being the first man to fire a shot on the Union side at the great battle of Shiloh.
Mr. Swaim was a resident of St. Joseph, Missouri, when war was declared and enlisted in the 25th Missouri.
After serving with the 25th Missouri, Mr. Swaim was then assigned to the engineering commands to proceed ahead of General Sherman, when he arranged his famous march to the sea, to build bridges, repair railroads, and in other ways provide solid foothold for the advancing army.
