THE HENRY BULLETIN, Fri. April 3, 1925, p. 1, col.2:
Mr. Joseph William Hairfield died at his home four miles north of Martinsville, Va. last Monday afternoon.
He was 88 years old.
At the beginning of the Civil War he entered the Army of the Confederacy and was a faithful soldier during the entire four years of the struggle, only coming home one time for a short furlough.
Soon after the war he married Miss Mary Townes, and she and the following children survive him:
Messrs. James P. Hairfield, Winston, N.C., Edd, George W. and Fred of Roanoke; Lazarus, John T. and Joseph of Martinsville; Mrs. G. T. Watkins, West Virginia; Mrs. J. N. Burgess, Spray, N.C., Mrs. J. B. Draper, N.C., Mrs. F. D. Thomasson, Winston, N.C.
