Chalmers -- Stiles Jeffries, 76, of Chalmers, died at 9:45 a.m. Friday in St. Elizabeth Hospital, Lafayette, where he was admitted a few hours earlier. He had been in failing health two years and seriously ill two weeks.
Mr. Jeffries, a native of Stephensburg, Ky., had resided in Chalmers 40 years. He worked as a section laborer for Illinois Central and Monon Railroads and prior to his retirement in 1959, he was employed by National Homes Corp. in Lafayette. In 1919 in Lafayette, he was married to Nellie Colvin, who survives. He was a member of Chalmers Community Church and American Legion Post 268. He was a veteran of World War I.
Surviving with the widow are four sons, Leo of Robinson, Ill., Russell of Battle Ground and Loys and Charles, both of Chalmers; one daughter, Mrs. Fred Dunker of Brookston and two sisters, Mrs. Finley Miller and Mrs. John Wortham, both of Cecilia, Ky.
Jeffries, Stiles -- Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston. Due to graduation of a granddaughter, there will be no calling hours Sunday. Service at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, Pastor Earl O'Neal officiating. Burial in Chalmers Cemetery with military rites. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Three brothers and three sisters preceded him in death.
