Auburn - Norman Edward Chapman Jr., 68, a resident of Dayspring Lane, Auburn, was taken home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, April 11. It was a short time after a happy and sunny afternoon walk with his wife, that he passed from this life into eternity.

He was born July 8, 1938, in Melrose, Mass., through the love of Norman Edward Chapman Sr. and Beatrice (Berthel) Chapman. During his childhood, his family lived in a number of Maine communities including Winthrop, Brewer and Millinocket. He graduated from Stearns High School in Millinocket and went on to graduate from Wentworth Institute in Boston, then furthered his studies in electrical engineering at Northeastern University.

He had almost 12 relaxing and fulfilling years of retirement, after 22 years of being the executive director of Gracelawn Memorial Park in Auburn. His retirement goals were to have a closer and growing daily walk with God, a deepening love with his wife, Charlane, of 34 years, and a Godly communication with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed friends and reached out with compassion and encouragement to them.

In the 1960s his electrical engineering expertise quickly set him apart within that field, and at age 26, he became partner and vice president in an innovative semiconductor company named Powercube Corporation. The tiny semiconductor was revolutionary to that era of technology and was used to power government aircraft, as well as spacecraft for NASA. This semiconductor powered the camera used by our first explorers on the moon.

In 1955, he married Nadine Gallagher, and their union gave life to three children, Norm (Ned,) Bob and Julie. A life changing experience in 1971 came about when Nadine was diagnosed with leukemia. Both Ed and Nadine accepted Jesus into their hearts and lives, and they had 15 God-given months together after her diagnosis.

With a new heart and the Lord guiding, he left his Massachusetts business to become an instrument of showing God's love to people experiencing loss and bereavement. He and his children moved to Auburn, and he took over Gracelawn Memorial Park, a cemetery and crematory. Each day of his 22 years at Gracelawn, he hoped to help and encourage people dealing with loss of a loved one and tried to give them God's message and hope of eternity.

In the fall of 1973 shortly after moving to Auburn, he married Charlane Delmonico-Letarte. They gave birth to a son Jeremy in 1978.

His years in Auburn with his wife and children, family and friends held hard work and commitment. He understood more clearly how change in oneself can make us beautifully molded into surrendering our worldly ways into God's ways.

He loved to tell corny jokes and make people chuckle. He loved to talk with people whether he was in the grocery store, or church, or out walking.

His retirement years brought a lightness to his heart and a thankful enjoyment to his days. He deeply loved his family and being with them made his heart sing. He truly enjoyed the simple pleasures of life whether it was moments of Bible reading in the morning, watching birds and squirrels from his front window, puttering in the yard, putting on the golf course or taking his daily walk on Maple Hill in Auburn.

He loved and cherished these moments of life that the Lord had given him, yet he'd tell his family, he was ready to go home with the Lord whenever the time was that he was called. April 11, he experienced the call and is now in the Kingdom of God forever.

He was so loved and will be so missed by his wife, Charlane, as well as his children, Norm (Ned,) and partner, Tim, of Irvine, Calif., Bob and wife, Denise, of Mt. Vernon, Julie and husband, Mark Goodwin, of Harrison, and Jeremy and wife, Renee, of Burlington, Vt; eight grandchildren, Lindsay, Kaite and husband, Joe, Richard, R.J. and partner, Angie, Josh, Melissa and husband, Jason, Michael and wife, Nici, Jill and fiancee, Joshua; sister Dianne, and husband, Jim, of Richmond, Va.; brother, Don, and wife, Jean, of Hollis, N.H.; nieces and a nephew. He loved them all so much.
