Jonah 'Jay' Wagers Chenault, 95, died Tuesday, January 11, 2011, in Atlanta, Georgia. He was born to John Cabell Chenault Jr. and Bess Wagers Chenault on November 28, 1915, near Richmond, Kentucky. Four years later, he moved with his family to West Point, Mississippi, where he spent his youth and early adulthood.

Jay was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Signal Corps of the U.S. Army Air Force, primarily in the Pacific. For more than four decades, before and after the war, he was employed by the F.W. Woolworth Company, starting as a stock boy at a small store in West Point and retiring as an executive officer at corporate headquarters in Manhattan. From childhood Jay was a fervent and devout Christian, and wherever he lived he was an active servant in his church. In various congregations he served as deacon, elder, and elder emeritus. In addition to doing volunteer work for the church, he enjoyed golf, fishing, yard work and, most of all, being with family.

He was a loving - and well-loved - husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Jay was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, Elizabeth Doss Chenault; brother, David Chenault; and sister, Eleanor Drash. He is survived by his brother, John Chenault of Richmond, VA; by son, Wagers Chenault (Ellen) of Atlanta, daughter, Susan Ball (Dwight) of Winston-Salem NC, and son, Robert Chenault (Sarah) of Atlanta; grandchildren, Jeremy Ball (Erinne), Laura Chenault, Liza Chenault, Meredith Welborn (Jon) and Robert Chenault Jr.; and by great-grandson, Nathan Welborn.

The family will receive friends beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 23, 2011, at Saint Andrews Presbyterian Church in Columbia, SC. Funeral service will be held at the church at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, followed by burial in Bush River Memorial Gardens, Columbia, SC.
