"Uncle Caleb also moved to Indiana when the country was a wilderness. He had a large family - I wonder what has become of them?"
(Source: Dr James William Smith, (#64841246) from a letter he wrote Nov 9, 1878)
[Uncle Caleb moved to Fayette Co, IN, about 1806]
NEW INFORMATION of Sep 2013:
There is a grave marker for a Caleb Smith #35010813 in the Halstead Cemetery. The stone on that grave and information on that memorial are erroneous. With a little research, I have discovered that the stone is for a man who is actually buried in Hadley, Massachusetts!
Furthermore, I have a letter of 1909 where a descendant, Dr S Newell Hamilton, describes visiting that cemetery and grandfather Caleb's grave.
[From the 1909 letter:
"Then I saw the Hickson Halstead farm where our grandfather, Kale (Caleb) Smith, died in 1821 and is buried there].
I have inquired about the stone with the local DAR people in Indiana, and have had some "we are looking into it" responses, but nothing definitive. My own viewpoint is that although that stone is erroneous, it is better to have it there, as it keeps the little graveyard from being plowed up or used as pasture. I would like to find out who had the stone placed there. The stone is not mentioned in the 1909 letter, and I think that if it were there, it would have been mentioned. Dr S Newell Hamilton is the only descendant that I know of that remained in the area.
