A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, Ronnie Benton died at 5:15 a.m. Thursday, June 9, 2011, at Baton Rouge General Medical Center following a brief battle with cancer. He was 61 and a native of Baton Rouge. Visitation at University United Methodist Church on Monday, June 13, from 9 a.m. until a memorial service at 11 a.m., conducted by Dr. Van Stinson. His body was donated to the LSU School of Medicine. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Barbara Benton; two sons, Beau Benton and wife Jaci, and Clay Benton; a grandchild, Sadie Lynn Benton; a brother, Billy Benton and wife Jodi; and a sister, Ann Benton. Preceded in death by his parents, Byron and Evelyn Benton; in-laws, Dick and Betty Fenton; and sister-in-law, Kay Fenton. Ronnie was a 1968 graduate of Broadmoor High School and received a bachelor of science degree from LSU in 1972. He was drafted during the Vietnam War and served in the Navy from 1973 to 1978, stationed primarily in Japan. Ronnie retired from 30 years of longshoreman work at the Port of Baton Rouge in 2009 and cherished his new role as grandfather. He was a member of University United Methodist Church. A quiet and modest person, he was known for his selfless nature and devotion to family and was loved by all who knew him. The family wishes to thank the fourth floor oncology staff for their compassionate care and loving support.
