Death: Sep. 16, 2012

Thomas P. Anderson passed away on Sept. 16, 2012, after an extended illness. Survived by sister, Mary Stodghill of Mission Viejo, Calif.; several nieces and nephews, Tom was born to James and Georgia Anderson in Canton on Dec. 21, 1925. After graduation from Lehman High School, Tom joined the Air Force, proudly serving his country as a tail gunner in World War II, and flew in more than 25 missions over Germany. Tom received a bachelor of arts from Ohio University and a masters of education from Kent State University. In a teaching career that began in Ohio and spanned over 30 years, Tom taught English and History at the high school and middle school levels. After retiring from the Napa Valley, Calif. Unified School District, Tom returned to the Canton area, volunteering at the Edwin Shaw Rehabilitation Hospital, the Humane Society in Carrollton, and mentoring at-risk children through the juvenile court system. Tom was devoted to his cats, Ivan and Kitty Cat, and appreciated special friends, Dorothy and Max Moore, who continue to love and care for them. A compassionate lover of animals, Tom devoted his free time to animal shelters. A talented painter, Tom had enjoyed attending the monthly Lehman reunion lunches with former classmates, Scrabble, fishing, golf, snow skiing and poker with friends. A member of the Malone University Heritage Society, Tom enjoyed attending the Malone Pioneer football games at Fawcett Stadium and watching OSU football games. To help Malone students, Tom generously established a scholarship through his estate. To honor Tom's memory, charitable contributions for the 'Tom Anderson Endowed Memorial Scholarship' may be sent to: Office of Advancement, Malone University, 2600 Cleveland Ave., N.W., Canton, OH 44709. Tom donated his body to science for study at Case Western Reserve University, where a memorial service will be held in May 2013, with interment to follow at a future date at the Ohio Western Reserve National Veteran's Cemetery in Rittman, Ohio. Special thanks to Pastor Randy Heckert; the retirement communities of Stone Crossing, The Laurels of Massillon, and Emeritus at Canton.
