Ann Louise Steele Buck, MD, FACR, 81, of McKeesport, died Thursday, Nov. 17, 2011, at her residence. She was born May 1, 1930, in McKeesport, a daughter of the late James P. Steele and Fannie (Roney) Steele. She was previously married to Rudolph L. Buck, MD who predeceased her. She graduated from McKeesport High School in 1948 and attended Bucknell University, graduating with a bachelor of science degree in biology. She attended medical school at the Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1956. She was an intern and resident at McKeesport Hospital from 1956 through 1958, wanting to become a pediatrician. She temporarily retired to raise her two children, David and Stephanie. Stephanie followed in her mother's footsteps, becoming a pediatrician. David followed in his mother's footsteps, becoming a radiologist. She returned to medicine to resume her career, but chose to become a radiologist. She trained at Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh and Montefiore Hospital before becoming board certified by the American Board of Radiology in 1966. Radiologists of that era not only were experts in reading x-rays, but also at administering radioactive materials directly into patients, usually personally and by hand. She was a clinical assistant professor of radiology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and worked her early career at Magee Women's Hospital of Pittsburgh. She started a private practice in radiology, unheard of for a woman at that time, in 1968. At the same time, she served as the chairman of radiology at the former Charleroi-Monessen Hospital from 1968 to 1971. Her private practice in McKeesport grew considerably during those years. She was the first to offer the new technology of mammography in McKeesport. Ultimately, she was the 12th site in the US to be certified by the American College of Radiology in Mammography. It was a specialty she actively improved until her retirement, possibly saving hundreds of lives from breast cancer. She retired in 1995. During her career in medicine she was the vice president of the Pittsburgh Roentgen Society, a member of the Mammographer's Society of Pittsburgh, and a Fellow of the American College of Radiology. Her father was an executive with the GC Murphy Company and impressed on her early in her life a love for golf. Her father taught her to play golf at Youghiogheny Country Club when she was 12. She often recounted the many times that she played in the evening with him, allowing male members to play through, just to be polite. She rarely held them up. As a golfer, she was the Women's Club Champion at Youghiogheny Country Club in 1973 and 1976; president of the Women's Golf Association of Western Pennsylvania 1976 to 1977; president of the Pennsylvania State Women's Golf Association 1980 to 1982; and a member of the United States Golf Association Women's Committee 1984 to 1989. She taught Junior Golfers for more than 40 years.
