OAKLEY -- William Richard "Bill" Babbitt, 89-year-old Oakley resident, died Thursday, Jan. 5, 2006, at his home in Oakley.

He was born March 20, 1916, in Oakley (Basin), Idaho, to Moroni and Mary Jane Callahan Babbitt. He married Amy Marie Lind in Walla Walla, Wash., on July 8, 1942. They were sealed in the Logan LDS Temple on July 3, 1945. He enjoyed and held many positions and served in many different callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His last callings were in the Italian name extraction and a home teacher.

Bill's father died when he was 14 years old. Bill was the second oldest in the family and the oldest boy, so he started helping to support his immediate family at that time. Bill worked several years as a farmhand for several local farmers while finishing high school and a few years after high school. Bill served in England during World War II and, after an honorable discharge, began farming in Lynn, Utah. Bill worked for the Cassia Stake, Burley Processing and later the School District maintaining their buildings. He enjoyed working with his boys and others as they built miles of fence for many different people in the area.

He is survived by his wife, Amy; his children, Dennis (JoAnn) of Burley, Karen (Bob) Spangler of Payson, Utah, Christina (Nolan) Longhurst of West Jordan, Utah, David (Debbie) of Blackfoot, Mark (Jeanette) of Oakley and Nylene (Cal) Rowley of Salmon; 43 grandchildren; and 66 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters, Sara Koon and Elizabeth Filger, both of Sacramento, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Chester; sisters, Cora Rasmussen and May Sharp; and grandson, Logan Spangler.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 9, 2006, at the Oakley Stake Center of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 301 N. Center in Oakley, with Bishop Gary Lloyd officiating. Burial will follow in the Oakley Cemetery with military rites by the local veterans. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Payne Mortuary, 221 W. Main St. in Burley, and from 10 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the funeral on Monday at the church.
