Son of Margaret Hoffcut and Johnathan H. Allen. Married (1) Sarah (Sally) Jane Powers, 13 December 1793.

Migrated from Vermont with his parents, his wife, three children, extended family and some neighbor families into Canada and then crossed the St. Lawrence River to settle near what is now Madrid, New York.

The families who reportedly traveled with them by oxen team and sleds were those of Joseph Newton, Daniel Atkin, William Powers, William Lockwood, John Spears, Daniel Myers, Samuel Lytle, John Akin, William Sprowles, Joh Farewell and Joseph Powers. [Source: personal interview with George Russell Allen; published March 30, 1892 in the St. Lawrence Republican, page 5].

Settled at Liabon, near Red Mills until 1802 and then moved closer to what is now Madrid, St Lawrence County, New York. In 1810 moved to farmland about six miles east of Columbia Village.

"Heroes of the American Revolution" reports he was a Private in the Revolutionary War.

After his first wife's death in 1838, he married (2) Ester Newton, who was also buried in the Dixon Cemetery.
