DR. Tinsley, age 68, was born in Irontown, Ohio to the late Edward H. and Viola Mae (Veach) Tinsley. He was visiting his twin sister, Mary Clark, in Humble, Texas when he died.

With a genius IQ, he entered The Ohio State University at age 14. In college, he paid his way with earnings from checker exhibitions and tournaments. He received a bachelor's degree in 1950, a master's degree in 1953 and a doctorate in 1957. He taught mathematics at Florida State University 10 years and Florida A&M University 26 years.

Dr. Tinsley is considered by most experts to be the greatest checkers player ever. He won the world title from Asa Long in 1955 and defended it against English challenger, Derek Oldbury, in 1958, winning the match by a score of 9 wins, 1 loss, and 24 draws. Shortly after, he announced his retirement from competitive checkers in order to concentrate on his mathematics teaching and research post at the University of Florida.

Dr. Tinsley returned to the "Grand Old Game" in 1970 as a result of a curious deal with a friend who had long been trying to tempt him back to the board. "I told him I'd compete again if he gave up drinking," explained the abstemious Tinsley. The friend did not entirely stick to his side of the bargain, but Tinsley immediately regained the United States championship and, in 1975, the world title.

Tinsley was World Champion from 1955-1958 and from 1975-1991. He played in thousands of tournaments, matches and exhibitions, playing many tens of thousands of games. Of these he lost a total of seven games.
