Civil War: Company D, 1st Battalion, Native California Cavalry

Crisanto "Santos" Abila y Almenares was born at Los Angeles, Alta California, México, where he was baptized at the Los Angeles plaza church November 2, 1841. He was the son of Enrique Abila y [?] and María del Pilar Almenares y Ceseña (LA Baptism 01098; Pension Affidavits, dated May 28 and July 10, 1914). His mother's parents were José Ignacio Almenares and María Antonia Emigdia Ceseña y Márquez. Santos became a U.S. citizen with the transfer of California's sovereignty in 1848. Santos was a 21-year-old vaquero when he enlisted as a private at Los Angeles January 13, 1864. He was mustered into Company D, 1st Battalion, Native California Cavalry, at Drum Barracks March 3, 1864. Private Abila was promoted to sergeant April 1, 1865, but reduced to private July 14, 1865 (Co. Descriptive List). Private Santos was posted to Fort Mason, Arizona Territory, from September 1865 until January 1866. He returned to California with his company and was mustered out at Drum Barracks March 20, 1866 (Orton, 318). After the war he resided at Soledad, Los Angeles County, until 1877, at which time he relocated to Nogales, Santa Cruz County, Arizona Territory (1867 Los Angeles Great Register, 1870 US Census). He married Delfina López at Calabasas, Santa Cruz County, November 5, 1888. (Note: Calabasas is about 8 miles north of Nogales and adjacent to the site of old Fort Mason.) Santos applied for a Civil War veteran's pension at Nogales September 8, 1896, and received application No. 1,180,705 and certificate No. 1,117,202. In a questionnaire he submitted to the U.S. Department of the Interior, dated September 12, 1898, he indicated he was a resident at Nogales, that he was living there with his wife Delfina, and that they had no living children. Delfina had died or divorced Santos by April 1914, since Santos was single and 72 years old when he was admitted to the Pacific Branch, National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, at Sawtelle, Los Angeles County, California, April 27, 1914. He was discharged from the Sawtelle home at his own request March 25, 1915, and returned to Nogales. His soldiers' home record described him as 5' 5" tall with black eyes and a dark complexion. Santos cashed his last pension check at Nogales December 4, 1916. Santos Abila died of arterial sclerosis and Bright's disease at Nogales December 29, 1916, and was buried in the Nogales City Cemetery on December 30.
