José Felipe Badillo y García was born at Santa Bárbara, Alta California, México, and baptized at the Presidio Chapel September 10, 1835 (BP Baptism 01118). He was the son of Francisco Felipe Badillo y Ruíz and his third wife María Rafaela García y Ayala. His father and mother were married at the Santa Bárbara Presidio Chapel September 5, 1835 (BP Marriage 00205). José Felipe became a U.S. citizen with the transfer of California's sovereignty in 1848 and was living at Santa Bárbara with his parents in 1850 and widowed mother in 1860 (1850, 1860 US Census). His father and younger brother Eduardo were both lynched by Anglo-American vigilantes in 1859 after they were falsely accused of stealing a horse. He married María Tomasa Antonia Cota y Ortega at Santa Bárbara July 18, 1864, shortly before he enlisted as a private alongside his younger brother Felipe de Jesús at Santa Bárbara on July 25 (Pension File, NARA). He was mustered into Company C, 1st Battalion, Native California Cavalry. Private Badillo was posted to Fort Mason, Arizona Territory, from September 1865 to January 1866. He returned to California and was mustered out with his company at the Presidio of San Francisco April 2, 1866. He then returned to his wife at Santa Bárabara (1870 US Census). He died at Santa Bárbara and was buried in La Patera (Cieneguitas) Cemetery July 23, 1874 (SB Deaths, Bk 2, pg 8, No. 068). After his death Maria Antonia married Augustus Taylor Solomon. "The undersigned Pastor of the Catholic Church of Santa Barbara certifies that in the Second Book of Burials of the parish of Santa Barbara on page 8, and with number 68, is found the following record: 'On 23 of July A.D. 1874 I gave Ecclesiastical burial to the remains of Felipe Badillo, aged 36 years, married with Maria Antonia Cota, who died on the previous day and who had been administered the Sacraments.' The above is a correct translation of the original, and in testimony and witness thereof, I have here-onto set my hand this the 3rd day of May A.D. 1892. Rev. Fr. James Vila" (Pension File, NARA)
