Johnson was the son of Abner L Gaddis 1787 – 1854 and Martha Byal 1794 – 1887 Gaddis who emmigrated to Wayne county, Ohio sometime prior to 1820. His father was a soldier in the war of 1812 out of Pennsylvania. His mother a native of Ohio.
Johnson appears in the 1850 and 1860 Wayne County,Ohio census.
He joined the Union Army 15 Aug 1862 in Company H, 120th Infantry Regiment Ohio.He was Promoted to Full Sergeant on 28 Dec 1862, however he died of disease on 7 Oct 1863 at Carrollton, LA.
He was one of two sons who served in the Union Army and yet he paid the ultimate price for our country.
