Rev Charles Richard Handley

Birth: Sep. 6, 1786
Death: Sep. 12, 1873

In 1838 Rev. Handley was with Major Handley of the 45th Infantry before the 'Battle of Bossenden Wood' when 'Sir William Courtenay' shot at, but failed to injure, the Major. The Rev. Handley, who perhaps understandably sided with his more wealthy landowner parishioners, wanted the rioters who were killed in the incident to be buried in an unmarked mass grave; instead they were buried in separate graves to the north of the church, but without memorials. His notes on the affair stress 'Courtenay's' mental instability and the ignorance of his followers, which has come to be the most common interpretation of the affair. Handley was subsequently criticised in Parliament for doing too little to improve the lot of the poorest in his Parish.
