Salvatore A. Palermo of Stoughton a retired Boston firefighter, died Wednesday at Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton after a long battle with cancer. He was 70.
Born in Boston, Mr. Palermo was raised in the North End and attended Boston schools.
He was a veteran of the Army.
Mr. Palermo was appointed to the Boston Fire Department in 1967. He was assigned to Engine 53 in Roslindale, transferred to Engine 45 in 1974, Ladder 16 in 1982, and then Ladder 10 in Jamaica Plain in 1985. He retired in 1996 after 29 years of service. He was last assigned as an aide to Deputy Chief Kenney, Division 2.
Mr. Palermo was a member of the Boston Firefighters Local 718, IAFF, the Society of St. Florian, the Boston Firemen's Relief Fund, and the Boston Fireman's Mutual Relief Fund.
He was also a member of the Stoughton Knights of Columbus and the Stoughton Fish and Game club. He enjoyed gardening and and spending time with his family.
Mr. Palermo is survived by his wife, Mary E. (Hibbard); two sons, John and Stephen, both of Stoughton; his daughter, Mary L. Carlson of Stoughton; his sister, Laura Santos of Methuen; and five grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Monday at St. James Church, Stoughton.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Stoughton.
