On this memorial page when I received the transfer:
"Bill was married to Jessie Evelyn Noland in 1936, and he enlisted on May 29, 1942. He was commissioned after completing OCS (19th Co, 3rd Student Training Regiment) at Ft. Benning, GA from 22 Nov 1942-19 Feb 1943.

He served with Company I, 3rd Battalion, 345th Regiment, 87th Infantry Division, VIII Corps, Third Army in the European Theater until he was KIA on 4 March 1945 near Reuth, Rheinland Pfalz, Germany.

Lt Baker was buried in Foy American Cemetery #1 near Bastogne, Belgium until his remains were returned to the family in 1949. He was awarded the Purple Heart posthumously.

He was survived by his wife Evelyn, his 2-year-old daughter Judy, his mother Gertrude Matilda Baker, and his brother Russell A. Baker, a Marine who served in the Pacific Theater throughout the war."
