HICKS, Clarence Age 86, of Mansfield, died Saturday at Winchester Terrace Nursing Home. Mr. Hicks was born May 14, 1920 in Floyd County, KY to George & Amanda (Bailey) Hicks and has lived in Mansfield most of his life. Clarence had served in the U.S. Navy from 1937-1941 aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise during peace time. 1943-1945 served aboard the destroyer USS Cony for many major conflicts in the Pacific including Solomons, Saipan and Philippine Islands, Guadalcanal, and Okinawa. Receiving the World War II Victory Medal, American & Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medals and the China Service Medal. He returned to serve his country in 1968 in the Navy Seabee Reserve until his military retirement with the rank of 1st Class Petty Officer in 1983. Clarence continued dedicated service to his country serving on the Joint Veterans Council Burial Detail, volunteered on committees, and other veteran activities such as fish fry dinners and bingo until 86 years of age. Clarence supported the vision to construct a World War II Veteran monument in our nation's capital. At the age of 85 years old he made the journey to Washington D.C. to visit what he said was the most beautiful monument there. Clarence worked in TV repair for South Main TV in Mansfield and the Flxible Bus Company in Loudonville, retiring with 20 years of service. Mr. Hicks was a member of the Mansfield Baptist Temple, Fleet Reserve Assoc., American Legion post #16, VFW post #9943, Amvets post #26, and the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail. Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Thomas Michael & Phyllis Hicks of Mansfield; a daughter, Peggy Bosh of Mansfield; four grandchildren and their spouses, Jim & Erin Reeder of Galion, Shannon & Poncho Lane of Wooster, Angela Haynes of Mansfield, and Marlen Haynes III of Mansfield; eight great-grandchildren; two special nieces who offered their loving care during his illness, Eleanor Haering and Thelma O'Neil both of Mansfield; three brothers and sister-in-laws, Edgbert & Alice Hicks of Ada, OH, Ezra & Trilbia Hicks of Willard, Roger & Ella Hicks of Ashtabula; a sister, Bertha Hicks of Willard. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years whom he married August 30, 1941, Pearlie Prater Hicks who passed away November 12, 2003; his parents; a granddaughter, Michelle Katherine Hicks; two brothers, Chester and James Hicks; and two sisters, Reba Phillips and Rhoda Ousley. Friends may call at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors Tuesday from 5-8 P.M. and 1 hour prior to the funeral services, which will be held Wednesday at 1:00P.M. at the funeral home. Burial will be held in the Mansfield Cemetery where military services will be conducted by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion Scholarship program.
