Birth: Oct. 13, 1825
Monroe County
Ohio, USA
Death: Jan. 13, 1887
Hocking County
Ohio, USA

Hezekiah Hashman was born on October 13, 1825 in Monroe County, Ohio, one of at least 10 children born to Christian and Mary Elizabeth (Windam) Harshman.

His father was born in Pennsylvania and was of German ancestry. His mother was born in Virginia and was of English ancestry.

He grew up with his siblings in Goshen Township in Belmont County and Seneca Township in Monroe County.

He married Sarah Elizabeth Strickland, daughter of John Strickland, about 1848 in Monroe County, Ohio. (Their original marriage record was destroyed in the Monroe County Courthouse fire that occurred on the night of June 13, 1867.)

Together they had 7 children: Harriett Ann (1849-1935), John Charles (1851-1948), George W (1853-1922), Mary Elizabeth (1861-1913), Nancy Jane (1864-1955), Halinda (1866-) and another child whose name is unknown.

Hezekiah left Monroe County sometime after the 1850 Census and moved to Barlow, Washington County, Ohio, where he appears on the 1860 Census with Sarah and their 3 children.

He enlisted in the Union Army on September 9, 1862 and served as a Private in Company K, Ohio 92nd Infantry Regiment.

After his service to the Union he returned to Wood County, West Virginia, where he lived for a short time. Hezekiah and Sarah married again on October 14, 1869 in Parkersburg, Wood County, West Virginia. (This is possibly due to the fact that a marriage record was needed in order to receive a military pension and their original marriage record was destroyed.)

A few months later they appear on the 1870 Census living in Hocking County, Ohio, but by the spring of 1880 he was once again living Wood County, this time in Steele District near his nephew Hezekiah.

He died on January 13, 1887 in Hocking County, Ohio and is buried at Downhour (now known as Dawley) Cemetery. He was survived by his wife, three daughters, two sons and numerous other relatives.
