Birth: Jun. 3, 1970
New York County (Manhattan)
New York, USA
Death: Jan. 1, 1990
Loudoun County
Virginia, USA

Parents: Edward Wise and Nancy Bradeen Spannaus
Brother: Andrew Bradeen Spannaus

Michael attended the Bronx High School of Science in New York, and then transferred to Loudoun Valley High School in Virginia in 1985, where he was a member of the National Honor Society and numerous clubs. He was attending Duke University where he was studying biological engineering.

On the afternoon of January 1, 1990, while returning from Washington DC with a friend, both were killed in an automobile accident. On Jan. 4, more than 500 teachers,
family members, and friends attended a memorial service held at Loudoun Valley High School, with friends coming from as far away as California, Texas, and West Germany.

The tributes to Michael that night, from former teachers and friends, and from his younger brother Andrew, made clear that, in his 19 years, he had gone very far in the most important endeavor which can be undertaken by a human being: to beautify and uplift the lives of those around him. ``He wanted to be relied on, to take responsibility for himself and others,'' one teacher said. Said another: ``I ended the school year admiring his strength, his mind, his open-mindedness, his maturity, and his good humor. He is not a follower; he is his own man.''

``Michael didn't let you get away with anything you shouldn't,'' a high school classmate reported. According to
the president of Michael's fraternity at Duke, who led a group of more than 30 Duke students to the memorial, Michael--a classical trumpet player for many years--``traveled all around the states of North Carolina and Georgia, bringing music into other people's lives.'' Michael was, he said, what he wanted to be--``an architect of our happiness.''
