Robert Elsworth McMahon was born on April 18, 1887 in Proctor, Wetzel County, West Virginia. He was the 4th of 7 children born to Albert and Amanda Elizabeth (Butler) McMahon.
Robert grew up in Proctor on a farm that his family rented. He received a basic eduction and was able to read and write.
Sometime between 1901 and 1910 Robert, along with his parents and siblings, moved to nearby Washington County, Ohio. There they found and rented a house on Charles Street in the 1st Ward of Marietta. During this time Robert was a farm laborer.
A few houses down the street lived Maggie Leona (McCurdy) Lane. Maggie's first husband, Julian, died suddenly in 1909.
On February 11, 1911 in Washington County, Ohio he married the recently widowed Maggie Leona (McCurdy) Lane. Together Robert and Maggie had two children: Ethel Amanda, born on January 8, 1914 and Martha May, born on March 8, 1917.
By 1920 (as seen on the census) he was a Sheet Metal Worker for the Safe Cabinet Company, a well known company that operated in Marietta for nearly 50 years. Robert would work for Safe Cabinet up until before his death.
On October 29, 1936 at 2:15AM, at his residence on Charles Street in Marietta, Robert died. He was only 49 years old. His cause of death was Scoliosis of the Spinal Cord. Two days after his death, he was buried in Gravel Bank Cemetery.
His widow, Maggie, would die nearly 8 years later from Pulmonary Tuberculosis. She was buried in a separate cemetery.
