Presidents of Missions

Boyle, Henry Green, president of the Southern States Mission from 1875 to 1878, was born March 7, 1824, in Tazewell County, Virginia, the son of John Boyle and Jane E. Taylor. He was baptized Nov. 20, 1843, came to Nauvoo, Ill., from Virginia in 1845, after laboring about a year as a missionary. He enlisted as a member of the Mormon Battalion in July, 1846, and marched all the way to California as a private in Company C; re-enlisted and served another eight months, and then came to the Valley. In 1851 he went with Elders Amasa M. Lyman and Charles C. Rich to San Bernardino, and was one of the founders of that colony. He returned to Utah and filled seven missions to the Southern States, bringing a company of converts back with him each time. Elder Boyle filled fourteen missions in all. He died in November, 1908, in Arizona. (See also Pioneers and Prominent Men of Utah, p. 766.)
