He was the son of Henry Cameron (1812-1889) and Nancy Ann Foster (1814-1881), and enlisted with Company F, 8th Iowa Cavalry on 24 Jun 1863 from his residence in Drakesville, IA.

He was discharged 27 May 1865 at Davenport, IA.

On 21 Oct 1872 he married Mary Tenny. They had two children.
