He was a Captain and the Commander of Company F, 8th Iowa Cavalry, during the Civil War.
He was born to Daniel Cummins (1803-1886) and Mary Elizabth McKim of Spencer County, Indiana.
His family traces their history back three generations; from Daniel Cummins (1803-1886), to Ephraim Cummins (1770-1862), to Peter who was an officer in the English army and a citizen of Vincennes, Indiana in 1783.
On 4 March 1851 he married Maria Theresa Stauber (8 Dec 1833-12 Jun 1874) and they had eight children; Josephine C. Cummins, Eunice E. Cummins, Frank B. Cummins, Rufus E. Cummins, William R. Cummins, Theresa Cummins, Grant Cummins, and Laura Cummins.
His residence was at Moravia, Appanoose County, Iowa at the time of his commission on 30 Sep 1863.
He received a severe leg wound on 19 May 1864 at Cassville, Georgia and resigned his commission on 10 Dec 1864.
After the war he was Postmaster at Moravia and publisher of The Weekly Messenger newspaper for four years.
On 5 December 1874, he married Anna Rebecca Stauber (21 Jan 1850-17 Jan 1929) and they had two children; Blaine Cummins and Mabel Cummins.
On 22 May 1882 he filed for an invalid pension (#449983), certificate #225167.
His widow Anna Cummins also filed for a pension (#525887), #422525 on 11 Sep 1891.
His complete pension records are on file at the Oklahoma Historical Society in Oklahoma City.
