John F. Friend served in the Civil War from August 9, 1863 to August 13, 1865. He was a Private in Company F - 8th Regiment of the Iowa Volunteer Cavalry. John was enlisted in Newton, Jasper County, Iowa and discharged in Macon, Georgia. He was a Farmer when enlisted. Matthew D. Friend has copies of all John Friend pension records and miltary enrollment papers.

"Bridgeport, Nebraska. John Friend, an old soldier, was found lying dead near a fence on his place near Angora last Friday. the supposition is that he was struck by lightning, altough there was very little electrical disturbance that day. The body was taken to Grand Island for interment." He was found June 2, 1911.
