17th Virginia Regt. - CSA

The son of Wesley Avery was a clerk. He was wounded badly at the Battle of Seven Pines. He served as a courier in battle and a clerk in Pickett's headquarters. When Pickett told him of the surrender at Appomattox, Avery left him with the intention of joining the Army in North Carolina. He changed his mind and went home to Alexandria, being paroled 15 May 1865.
