Merrill, who resided on Brooklyn Avenue, Laurel, Delaware, served as a Staff Sergeant & Tail Gunner on a B-24J "Naughty Nan" (#42-99949), 328th Bomber Squadron, 93rd Bomber Group, 8th Air Force, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.
He enlisted in the Army on September 17, 1943 in Camden, New Jersey. He was noted as Single, without dependents.
Merrill was "Killed In Action" in the collision of his B-24 with B-24H (#42-94969) during a bombing mission to Koblenz, Germany. They collided and crashed in Ingelmunster, Belgium. He was awarded the Air Medal and a Purple Heart.
He had served the Air Corps for one year at the time of his death. He was decorated with the Air Medal and a Purple Heart.
