Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, Robert was not officially declared by the military as being dead until January 20, 1946.
Son of Harry Coleman and Idella B. Stewart Coleman.
Husband of Marian Mote Coleman.
Robert, who resided at 1715 Rodney Street, Wilmington, Delaware, served as a Captain & Pilot on B-24D "The Swan" (#42-40475), 63rd Bomber Squadron, 43rd Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.
He enlisted in the Army on September 3, 1941, prior to the war, in Wilmington, Delaware. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being Single, without dependents.
He was married after his enlistment.
Robert was originally declared "Missing In Action" when his crew, while on a armed reconnaissance mission over the Bismarck Sea, did not return to base.
He had served in the Air Corps for two years and four months at the time of his death. He was decorated with the Air Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster and a Purple Heart.
Robert's remains, along with the remains of his entire crew, were recovered in 2008 and they were all interred at the Arlington National Cemetery on August 27, 2008 where a previously installed headstone had been erected.
His official status was changed to "Killed In Action"
