"JOHN B. BIDDLE, CIVIL WAR SOLDIER"

John was born in 1838 in Sandusky Township, Crawford County and died at age 24 on December 31, 1862. Notably, he was killed at the Battle of Stones River in Murfeesboro, Tennessee, dying on the same date and at the same battle as William Henry Harrison Phillips. He was shot and killed instantly as his regiment made their third stand along a ridge in a corn field. At the time of his death, John was waving his sword and encouraging his men to stand firm, no matter the odds. John was noted by his men as being brave, generous and noble-hearted. He was greatly loved by all the men who knew him.

John was the son of Alexander Biddle, the famous pastor, and his wife, Mary Magdalena (Noftzger) Biddle. Alexander Biddle was the brother of Daniel Biddle, the father of George Washington Biddle. George Washinton Biddle was the father of Martha Ellen Biddle, who married Henry Albert Snyder.

John enlisted in the Union army on July 23, 1862 at the age of 23. He was a 2nd Lieutenant in Company C of the 101st Ohio Infantry. It appears he got his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant from the Governor because he raised a company of men.

Following the Civil War, most veterans joined the Grand Army of the Republic, a fraternal organization much like the VFW. The GAR post in Sulphur Springs, Crawford County, was named the Biddle Post in memory of John. John is buried in the Biddle Cemetery in Crawford County.
