From the autobiography of David E. Rommel:
"On the morning of August 12, 1861, Lawrence Easterly and I went to Anamosa Iowa, to see the boys who had enlisted start for the seat of war. When we arrived there we could not resist the temptation to go with the boys and help preserve our nation. So we enlisted and there on that day commenced an experience that will never be surpassed in my mind. .....(Much more)..... On the 24th day of July , received my pay and was mustered out with my regiment. Thus closes a four years' career of army life."
Note: Civil War Soldier, died at Franklin, MD, Age 22 years
