Trinity High School teacher for 35 years

Wilma Stewart Mitchell, 89, of Washington, died Tuesday, May 8, 2007.

She was born July 3, 1917, in Buffalo Township, a daughter of J. Lloyd and Bess Tripp Stewart.

She attended Rural Valley Grade School in Buffalo Township, was a 1934 Washington High School graduate and 1938 graduate of Waynesburg College, with a bachelor of arts degree in mathematics.

She completed graduate work at Washington & Jefferson College, University of Pittsburgh and Penn State, earning a master's degree equivalent.

Mrs. Mitchell taught school for 38 years with three years at Lagonda Grade School, South Franklin Township, and 35 years at Trinity High School as a mathematics teacher, retiring in 1980.

She was a member of Church of the Covenant, where she served as a deacon and an elder and was active in Presbyterian Women's Association. She was a member of Washington County chapter of School Retirees, Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees and National Education Association.

She was also a member of AARP, Senior Citizens and a charter member of Beta Zeta chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma.
Following her retirement, she participated in the VITA program (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) for 26 years.

On October 12, 1946, in North Buffalo United Presbyterian Church, she married John N. Mitchell, who died September 13, 2000.

Mrs. Mitchell was the last of her immediate family.

Surviving are a daughter, Karen Mitchell (James H.) Christy of Allison Park; two grandchildren, Matthew James Christy and Elizabeth Christy (Clint) Rome of Chicora; a sister-in-law, Mary B. Stewart; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are a son, James Mitchell; a sister, Helen Stewart Carl; and two brothers, John L. and William B. Stewart.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday in Piatt and Barnhill Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington, where services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 12, with the Revs. David Turner and Hugh Crawford officiating. Interment will follow in Washington Cemetery. Piatt and Barnhill Funeral Directors Inc.
